FICTION AND REALITY/FICTIUNE SI REALITATE: RUDY SPILLMAN (ISRAEL)

FANTASTIC JOURNEY IN THE ENCHANTED FOREST
After my daily activities I return home. Tired, but well. I am content and wish to make myself something to eat, and then get some rest. Home sweet home. Here I am in front of my house. All that is left for me to do is put the key in the lock and turn it. I put the key in the lock, but the key will not turn. My impatience is growing by the second. Then I force the key a little, but careful not to break it inside. And I do what all people do in these circumstances. I try turning it the other way. The door has always opened by pushing it, nonetheless I also try to pull it. I am overcome by a panic attack. Sometimes, when we are faced with situations that seem illogical to us, we will react illogically as well. As if the lack of external logic combined with internal logic could result in something rational or in the solving of such situation. I leave the key in the lock because sooner or later I will have to open it. I am not picking keys at random to see if I get lucky. This key has opened the same door for years. One goes with the other and combined they will allow me to enter my house. I move away from the door, I look around noticing every detail. Lest I should be mistaken of building; or of neighbourhood, of city. Maybe I was mistaken of world and for my key to work I must return to the world where things are always the same. The same keys will always open the same doors. Again, I notice the door of my house, the key in the lock. I say to myself: “This has been the door of my house forever…” And I am thinking: “May it be that at some point this is not so anymore?” And I rush towards the door in a new attempt to open it.
They say that “the third is the charmed one” and it must be true to some extent as at the third try the key brakes in two. One part remains in the lock, the other, in my hand. Saddened and having lost my nerve a little, an awfully unpleasant situation for it revealed my lack of control and my will to posses it, I give a strong kick on the door with my right foot. The delayed squeak of the rusty hinges added to the dull sound of my foot kicking the door. The door hardly opened. As I looked down to the threshold, I noticed what had stopped it from opening. I can see dirt, grass, weed, root pieces and plants. The beautiful and shiny marble flooring which gleamed at my house’s entrance is no longer there.
I look at the useless piece of key in my pocket and launch myself towards the defenseless door as if it were the cause of all my troubles. Knowing it was no longer about locks and keys, I push it with all my strength squashing a few weeds under my feet, squeezing out the chlorophyll from the green and lively plants, stirring the warm dirt. The door gives in a bit more leaving me enough space to step inside. I do so, and I see a butterfly flying out of my house. But now that I am inside again I can say that my home sweet home is not there anymore. I can say that the butterfly came from a forest which seemed enchanted… and I strongly doubt it can adapt to the place where it flew.
An annoying gust of wind carrying dust and leaves threw me out of balance. I close my irritated eyes and I hear, beside the wind, the sound of the door slamming shut behind me, followed by the faint roar of a beast. This cannot be! This is too much! I open my eyes, still irritated, and I see an astonishing lion coming towards me… it was walking and always in my direction. It was at about twenty meters away from me. I immediately turn my head in search for the door. But it is no longer there. It is all woods: a beautiful, enchanted forest full of brown, golden and green colors. A place where sun rays and the abundant vegetation seem to be dancing together.
But the beast’s roar and its slow advance towards me tell me that not all this is as beautiful as it may seem...

ROMANIAN PERSPECTIVES: ELISABETA ISANOS

CUVINTE
Spun vară, şi-i toamnă, spun frige, şi-i frig,
numesc răsărituri, şi ele apun.
Spun zi, şi e noapte, spun plin, şi-i nimic,
cenuşă-i în clipa când flacără spun.

Spun rouă, şi-mi cade pe deget arsură,
spun pace, şi lumea-i scăpată din frâu...

Şi-i ziua dintâi.

WORDS
I say summer, and it’s autumn, I say it burns and it’s cold,
I name sunrises and they go down.
I say daylight and it’s night, I say full and
it’s nothing,
it’s ashes when I say blaze.

I say dew and a burn is on my finger,
I say peace and the world is in free reins…
I’d better have my lips sealed
when drought comes off a river name.

When night fills up with stars,
lights do not follow,
you just remain with your mumble…

And yet there are wins in this:
thaw comes when you mumble just cold,
you say “that’s the end…” And it’s just the first day.

CONTEMPORARY HORIZON MULTICULTURAL FOUNDATION / LA FUNDACION MULTICULTURAL “EL HORIZONTE CONTEMPORANEO” / FUNDAŢIA MULTICULTURALĂ “ORIZONT CONTEMPORAN”

We would like to let those interested know that the preparations for the establishment of the Foundation are going very well, which gives us the certainty that our sustained efforts will be successful despite the difficulties we have faced so far.
The Initiative Committee for the Foundation’s (ICF) objective is to purchase a head office in Bucharest until the end of May and finalizing the legal procedures necessary for the establishment of the Foundation until 31st July 2010.
As the ICF has managed to cover the necessary cost only partially, we would like to renew the appeal to our Romanian and foreign supporters to contribute financially to the Foundation’s establishment. An estimate shows that, if only a quarter of the 5163 readers of Contemporary & Literary Horizon made a small contribution (for example, 15 Euros a person), the necessary funds for purchasing a head office could be collected. The above mentioned sum constitutes a small percentage of a person’s personal expenses budget and, instead of increasing the profit of tobacco, alcohol producers or even of producers of foods unbeneficial to health, it could be put to much better use by a non-profit institution and the positive results (on a cultural and multicultural level) will be long term ones.
Depending on the received donations, different rights will be bestowed as follows:
1) for donations of 50-100 Euros: two free copies of the journal and the title of member of the Foundation;
2) for donations of 150-300 Euros: four free copies of the journal, the title of member of the Foundation and a free copy of the Anthology of the Contemporary & Literary Horizon journal (version B, selective) which will be published this year;
3) for donations of 350 – 500 Euros: a one-year free subscription, the title of founding member and a free copy of the Anthology of the Contemporary & Literary Horizon journal (version A, complete) which will be published this year;
4) for donations of 550-1000 Euros: a one-year free subscription, the title of founding member, a free copy of the Anthology (version A) and the right to be on the Honorary Board of the Foundation;
5) for the donation which would cover the entire cost for the establishment of the Foundation and the purchase of the head office: all the rights stipulated in point 4 and the title of Honorary President of the Foundation.
For every donation a receipt will be issued and the list of donors will be disclosed to those interested.
On this occasion we would like to express our warmest regards to those who have decided to join us in taking the necessary steps to set up the Foundation.
Bucharest, May 2010

On behalf of the Initiative Committee for the Foundation,
Daniel Dragomirescu, Executive President
Mihai Cantuniari, director

______________________________________

1) para donaciones de 50-100 euros: dos números gratuitos de la revista y la cualidad de miembro de la Fundación;
2) para donaciones de 150-300 euros: cuatro números gratuitos de la revista, la cualidad de miembro de la Fundación y un ejemplar gratuito de la “Antología de la revista “El Horizonte Literario Contemporáneo” (la versión B, selectiva), que será publicada durante este año;
3) para donaciones de 350-500 euros: suscripción gratuita de un año a la revista, la cualidad de miembro fundador y un ejemplar gratuito de la “Antología” (la versión A, íntegra);
4) para donaciones de 550-1000 euros: suscripción gratuita de un año de la revista, la cualidad de miembro fundador, un ejemplar gratuito de la “Antología” (la versión íntegra) y el derecho de ser elegido en el Colegio de Honor de la Fundación;

1) pentru donaţii de 50-100 euro: două numere gratuite din revistă şi calitatea de membru al Fundaţiei;
2) pentru donaţii de 150-300 euro: patru numere gratuite din revistă, calitatea de membru al Fundaţiei şi un exemplar gratuit din °Antologia revistei “Orizont literar contemoran” (versiunea B, selectivă), care se va publica în cursul acestui an;
3) pentru donaţii de 350 – 500 euro: abonament gratuit pe un an la revistă, calitatea de membru fondator şi un exemplar gratuit din “Antologia revistei “Orizont literar contemporan” (versiunea A, integrală), care se va publica în cursul acestui an;
4) pentru donaţii de 550-1000 euro: abonament gratuit la revistă pe un an, calitatea de membru fondator, un exemplar gratuit din “Antologie” (versiunea A) şi dreptul de fi ales în Colegiul de Onoare al Fundaţiei;

NEWS OF THE WORLD: MARCELA MEIRELLES (URUGUAY)

BELONGING

When I was first asked to write about being a student in Montevideo I felt pretty reluctant, got stuck, and couldn’t write anything for a few days. But then I realized that I shouldn’t write about how it is living here or being an actual student. Instead I should write about belonging.
It is autumn, the city begins waking up from a mid-summer dream, the carnival has ended a few weeks ago and a very particular energy lies upon Montevideo. The climate is perfect, not too hot, and not cold at all. The trees dress up the streets with their fallen leaves, as a golden rain falls from their branches. People still moves rather slowly, not quite eager to go back to their hectic lives. The machine is about to start its movement.
Your last summer as a kid is now gone, and a mixture of feelings arises. In between nostalgia, fear and excitement there is a sense of self-achievement. You are now a citizen; you get your first driver’s license, you are old enough to vote (and obliged to do so by the law), and you become a student at university. This means you belong in all possible ways to the society that nurtured you for so many years, and now you have the chance to give something back to it, you have a voice.
Most of the students are not actually from Montevideo, they had to leave their home cities to come study in one of the best universities in South America. This means a drastic change in all possible ways. Moving alone to an apartment building, leaving your family some hundred kilometers away, leaving all your habits, and having to be all the things you had your parents to be for you. On the one hand this can result very difficult, but on the other, it is a very important step in growing up. In my country, living in other cities, rather than Montevideo, is like living in a small town where there’s too much security, and too little everything to be able to give you what you need in order to grow up into society.
You are now a part of a breathing organism that shapes the city and makes it alive. The masses of youth take over, expressing their ideas and helping mold their own community. The future of the nation lies in our hands.
This organism, the University, is autonomous; this means that it works like a country itself, in the sense that there are leaders and representatives to be elected. The university depends on the state only for the money, and in every other way it is ruled by its own laws. The seek of knowledge, and an attempt to educate the population are the foundations. It is free for all citizens, providing equal opportunities for everyone. And even when there are some few private universities, the public one is currently the best, the most demanding, and the one with higher standards. On a more personal note I think that this is slowly changing, and we, students, teachers, and authorities have to work hard to keep that honorary place that meant so much work for many, many people throughout the years. In times of general well being, as in times of crisis and darkness, through all the adversities the Universidad of the República Oriental del Uruguay kept its high standards.
Montevideo is the physical place, the container to our minds and a most important teacher. The city we help molding, also molds us; it is a back and forward. Society comes together, the whole country meets in this cosmopolitan centre, and we students have one of the most important roles in this master-play.
